An association to invent the chemistry of tomorrow

Strength in unity. This is the watchword of Chemesis, an industrial platform  developed by the major speciality chemicals actors, who have come together to form a dedicated association. The major issues and ambitions of an ultra dynamic site, a forum for a collective strategy uniting industries and territory.

“Together, we will work much better."
Thomas Amery, Uniper’s Site Manager and vice-president of Chemesis

Ever greater competitiveness and attractiveness

In 2013, the industries of the Carling Saint-Avold platform regrouped themselves in an association to oversee the site, renamed Chemesis at the same time. The aim of the project is threefold:

  1. To boost the competitiveness of the site by sharing utilities and offering strong support for innovation,
  2. To increase its visibility through common communication mechanisms,
  3. To attract new investors and simplify their establishment at the site.

To this effect, the association groups together 12 active public and private members.

9 géants mondiaux de la chimie :

  • Air Liquide, the world leader in gases, technologies and associated services.
  • Altuglas International, the world leader in acrylic glass.
  • Arkema, top French chemical company and major actor in global chemistry, designer of materials and innovative solutions.
  • Uniper, a leading European energy company.
  • Protelor, a subsidiary of major French chemical company Protex International, specialising in organic synthesis products such as sequestrants and dispersants.
  • SNF, No 1 global producer of polymers for the treatment of water
  • Total Petrochemicals France, the Total group's chemicals branch, basic petrochemicals and mass-consumption polymers (Polyethylene, Polypropylene and polystyrene) inEurope, in the United States, the Middle East and Asia.
  • Le Pôle de Plasturgie de l’Est (PPE) (Plastics Processes Centre of the East), a technical centre of international renown specialized in the implementation of composite materials.
  • Cokes de Carling.

1 major regional actor:

"In addition to the effect of economy of scale, the synergies put in place provide legibility and visibility to all the industries and service providers at the site".
Franky Smisaert, Director of Total on Chemesis

For the different actors of the project, it is also an opportunity to strengthen regional dynamism in order to attract still more talent and strengthen the links between industry, research, and local educational institutions.

"The Chemesis project opens opportunities for rich and varied employment, open to all types of profiles. It mobilises the different actors of the territory."
Gabrielle Kakeldey, Assistant to the Delegate General of the Grand Est UCI

A long-term vision

Chemesis continues the progressive integration of competitive and efficient industrial services. Its first objective? To maintain a level of of excellence in industrial safety. Another important issue for speciality chemicals actors: Energy and the environment. Numerous projects are under way, including in connection with a virtuous water management cycle.

"One of the ambitions of Chemesis is to be an integrated site in terms of circular economy", stresses Franky Smisaert, Director of Total on Chemesis. "Non-valued products must become sources of raw materials and will soon be exchanged between the present and future industries of the platform".

Finally, the platform intends to strengthen actions in favour of the well-being and health of its employees. A system of common social services is being studied and could lead to the creation of a single, reinforced works council

Altuglas® ShieldUp, the PMMA of tomorrow

At the Chemesis site , Altuglas International has designed and produced Altuglas® ShieldUp, a spectacular mesh and nano-structured acrylic plate. On top of everything: a light-weight glazing that combines transparency and resistance, and lends itself easily to complex forms. This ultra-innovative technology opens up innumerable prospects for the automotive, photovoltaic, industrial, and secure glazing sectors in particular.

Elium®, the composite of the vehicle of tomorrow

Both extremely resistant and recyclable, Arkema's Elium® resin permits the construction of thermoplastic composite parts 50% lighter than steel, capable of substituting for the metal. To meet the high rates of the automotive industry, Elium® resin can now be mass-produced. Developed at Composite Park in partnership with the M2P TRI platform, the new FAST RTM (FAST Resin Transfer Moulding) manufacturing process enables the final "net shape" of the product to be obtained in a single operation. In 2017, this facility was rewarded with the JEC Innovation Awards prize.

The multifunctional liquid resins of Cray Valley

At its new Chemesis unit, Cray Valley produces liquid resins based on polybutadiene. These products are used as additives for rubber, adhesives and other speciality products. They reinforce the adhesion of tyres, reduce the thickness of smart phone touch screens, and improve the performance of boosters during rocket launches, for example.

The super-absorbents of Sumitomo Seika

At Chemesis, Arkema operates a super-absorbent polymers (reticulated sodium acrylate polymer) unit, for the Japanese giant Sumitomo Seika. Using gel processes and in inverse suspension, the plant produces a "Hygienic" range intended for the manufacture of sanitary towels and nappies for newborns as well as an "Industrial" range designed for the insulation of underwater cables. The finished product is in the form of a powder with a particle size between 200 and 400 micrometers and whose tremendous absorption capacity is 65 gr./gr.* for the Hygiene range and 500 gr./gr.* for the Industrial.
